EFFECT OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE ON TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP OF PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN SOUTH EAST, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study examined the effect of emotional intelligence on transformational leadership of pharmaceutical manufacturing firms in South East, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to: ascertain the relationship between self-awareness and intellectual stimulation; evaluate the relationship between relationship management and idealized influence; examine the relationship between social skill and employee’s Individual consideration and evaluate the relationship between motivation and employee inspirational motivation of pharmaceutical manufacturing firms in South East, Nigeria.   The population of the study was three thousand, seven hundred and forty-two (3742) employees made up of senior and junior staff of pharmaceutical manufacturing firms in South-East, Nigeria. The sample size of   348 was drawn using Freund and William’s formula at 5 percent error margin. A survey design was adopted for the study. Instruments used for data collection were interview guide and questionnaire. A total of three hundred and forty eight (348) copies of the questionnaire were distributed to the respondents from which three hundred (300) copies were returned while forty eight copies (48) were not returned. Four hypotheses were tested using Z – test with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The study revealed that Self-awareness had significant positive relationship with the intellectual stimulation, Z (95, n = 300) from 6.697 < 8.372, p < 0.05. Relationship management had significant positive relationship with idealized employees   Z (95, n = 300) from 7.736 < 9.180, p < 0.05.  Social skill had significant positive relationship with employee’s Individual consideration, Z (95, n = 300) from 7.725 < 8.776, p < 0.05 and Motivation had significant positive relationship with employee inspirational motivation of pharmaceutical manufacturing firms in south East, Nigeria, Z (95, n = 300) from 7.679 < 8.949, p < 0.05.  The study concluded that self-awareness, relationship management, social skill and motivation had significant positive relationship with intellectual stimulation, idealized employees, and employee’s individual consideration ad employee inspirational motivation. The study recommended that there was need for self-awareness to communicate with clarity and intention, this would give the power to influence outcomes and help become better decision-makers and give more self-confidence.
